January 27, 2008
Hello,

Teenage Issue

1. How we Love Teens.

2. For Teenagers.

3. An opportunity to get published.

4. Current Health News

I love teens for their bubbly, carefree and curious characters. I was once a college teacher and I had so much fun. Teaching and parenting are similar roles in a sense that both teachers and parents hold similar leadership roles to the teens. Teaching is also not a very easy role when it comes to teens who are always the “know it all”.

The only way to be the best teen teacher and/ or parent is by building a concrete relationship. Teens need to be understood and heard out. Good leadership skills include listening and involving your followers in your decision-making. However never lose sight of your main role, that of LEADING and doing so by example.

This issue is meant to inspire Teens themselves. If you are not a teenager, please forward this to all teenagers in your life. We have a number of articles from “Dealing with Rejection”; “Having Fun”; “Handling Finances” to “Beauty” and “Lots of Fun”. Teens are such a blessing and our future.

4. Health News Highlights this Week:

Cell Phones Linked to Sleep Disorders

Talking on a cell phone before bedtime may disrupt your sleep according to a cell phone industry-funded study conducted by researchers from Wayne State University in Detroit and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. The study found that radiation from a cell phone can cause insomnia, headaches and confusion and may reduce the amount of deep sleep, thus interfering with the body's ability to refresh itself. People with Diabetes and Other Illnesses

When people with diabetes get a flu, cold or other illness, it can be a challenge to take care of their diabetes. But they need to do so or risk serious complications, says the American Diabetes Association.

Diabetes-Management Tips for Diabetics who are ill:

  1. Check blood glucose levels every three to four hours. Also, if you've been instructed by your health-care team, check for ketones in your urine every few hours. Ketones, a waste product produced when the body begins to use stored fat for energy, can build up if a diabetic doesn't take insulin at regular intervals. High ketone levels can lead to ketoacidosis, which can lead to coma or death.
  2. Unless told otherwise by your doctor, don't stop taking insulin or other medications.
  3. Even if you've lost your appetite, try to eat. The ADA recommends at least 15 grams of carbohydrates about every hour.
  4. If you're vomiting or have diarrhea, or have a fever, try to drink a cup of fluid each hour to prevent dehydration. If your blood glucose level is too high, try sugar-free liquids such as water or broth. If your blood glucose level is low, try drinking liquids with about 15 grams of carbohydrates in them, such as a half a cup of apple juice or one cup of milk.
  5. Talk to your doctor before you take any over-the-counter cold or flu medicines, because some of them can increase blood glucose or blood pressure levels.
  6. Call your doctor if: there is a rise in ketones or if there are ketones in your urine for more than 12 hours; if you've been vomiting or had diarrhea for more than six hours; if you have a fever that keeps going up or one that lasts more than a day; if you have abdominal pain; or if you can't control your blood glucose levels.

New HIV Drug Approved for Adults Who Fail Other Treatments

The anti-HIV medication entravirine has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for adults who have failed treatment with other antiretrovirals.

The long-term effects of entravirine haven't been studied, nor have the drug's effects in pregnant women or among people age 16 or younger, the agency said.

Entravirine is distributed by Tibotec Therapeutics, whose parent firm -- Ortho Biotech Products -- is based in New Jersey.
