Lose Weight the Healthy Way

We need to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight to keep our hearts healthy. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there are more than 1 billion overweight adults in the world today, with at least 300 million of them being obese.

Obesity and overweight are known causes of many diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancer, hypertension and stroke. Today's society consumes more saturated fats and sugars compared to the past, and that alone is escalating the obesity figures.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the commonly used tool to determine one's goal weight. To calculate the BMI you will take your weight in kilograms and divide it by your weight squared in metres:

50kg ÷ (1.5 m)^2 = 22.2

22.2 is a BMI of a 1.5m tall person weighing 50kg. The acceptable BMI is between 18.5 and 25 with anything below 18.5 considered underweight, between 25 and 30 considered overweight and any BMI above 30 is considered obese.

A BMI is however not an accurate measure for body builders and pregnant people. Recent research shows that persons who were undernourished in their childhood and put on excessive weight are more likely to develope more severe diabetes, high blood presure and heart disease at an earlier age compared to those who were never undernourished.

The Healthy way to Weight Loss

You can lose weight and maintain weight loss by leading a healthy lifestyle and choosing a diet that is low in fat and high in fibre; includes more fruits and vegetables; includes nuts and wholegrains; cuts out fatty and sugary foods; limits saturated animal based fats; and includes unsaturated plant based oils.

A healthy diet is essential to lose weight without having extra skin hanging all over your body. You need to learn and master the art of controlled calorie intake to be able to reach your goal weight in a healthy way. The combination of diet and portions will have to be a priority to reach optimum benefits in losing weight the healthy way.

Exercise is another important fat burner. Build your muscles, burn the excess fat and reach your goal weight through the proven trio method "diet,cardio and strength exercise".

Before you embark on any strategy, its wise to get your hormones tested by your doctor for any imbalances. Most people who can't lose weight have some form of a hormonal imbalance.
