PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

This is amongst the most common hormonal disorders affecting women of reproductive age that leads to infertility. The sad thing is that it is not easy for doctors to diagnose this condition.

The problem with these symptoms is that they are similar to those of other hormonal disorders like thyroid problems. It is therefore safer to visit your doctor if you experience some of the above-mentioned symptoms and do the proper medical tests. Women with the condition usually have multiple cysts on the ovaries which result in enlarged ovaries.
The Effects
This condition can lead to Type II diabetes because it tempers with the body’s insulin consumption. The high insulin levels can be a cause for low levels of good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) which further leads to increased risks of heart attack or stroke. PCOS goes together with bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. The irregular menstrual periods may also lead to the cancer of the uterus.
Some women with PCOS do fall pregnant and some unfortunately miscarry. It is however possible to have a normal pregnancy when you are leading a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet or getting some medication.
The Treatment
There are some medical treatments that can be used to treat patients. The medication can be used for fertility or to balance the hormones. As usual we promote healthy diet as the best medication. A balanced Low GI diet and regular exercise does help with this condition. We again emphasise the goodness of wholegrains, fruits and vegetables. The diet is our major healing source.
