Covering Letter
A perfect covering letter is as important to have as a perfect CV. Get a clear message across and sell yourself with a good letter. Below is a list of your guidelines:
- Neatness.
Your letter must be neatly typed in a clean white paper. Don’t try to hard to impress with a lot of font colours and unnecessary graphics. Black and white is always professional.
- Clarity.
Don’t keep your prospective employer guessing. Let the letter speak for itself and state which position you are applying for, clearly quoting the reference code when provided. The title of the position and its reference where applicable must be in the opening phrase.
- For Attention.
If you can, find out whom to address the application to and do so. That will be something like; Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms, etc in the beginning of the letter.
- Spell Check.
Proof read your letter at least twice. There are a lot of typos when you write something you consider as being simple. You can’t afford to make any spelling or grammatical mistakes as that will easily put your employer off. It also gives an indication that you cannot focus and do a good job.
- Quality Content.
You may think I have a good CV, why fuss over a few lines? Guess what? Your chances may rely on your covering letter
. This is your first chance to market yourself. It is true that “first impressions last”. This letter is often your very first impression. Your application letter should reflect what was on the job advertisement.
In a few lines in the letter body, mention your qualities or experience in line with the job advertisement. Don’t forget to mention the highlights of your career. An example would be to state that you have always worked independently with minimal supervision.
- The End.
.
A glamorous ending can also cost you a prospective job. Your ending must be a simple “Yours sincerely”. Then write your name and put your signature below if you like. Then send it to your prospective employer with your CV. Remember, your letter should be seen before your CV.
All the best!!!
