Taking Decisions

It looks like a second nature to man, procrastinating and avoiding taking decisions. This is especially true to important and long-term effect issues. I usually change about 4 colour schemes before ultimately rolling my paintbrush on the wall or postponing yet another décor task.

Reasons Deciding can be Scary

1. Consequences. We are often uncomfortable deciding because we are scared of facing the consequences later. What we forget is that by not committing now we have actually DECIDED to do nothing.

2. History. The past experiences of an action gone wrong affect our enthusiasm to decide in future. Remember that not all of your actions will yield success. History, whether good or bad, is there for us to learn from it.

3.Thinking of Others. When an outcome of your actions affects other family members. “Should I invest in the Stock Exchange or in the low risk assets?” "Can I just resign from my strenuos job now, and look for something else later?"

4. Lack of knowledge and/or experience. You may be faced with deciding on an subject you are not familiar with. Its very uncomfortable taking important decisions in a new job for instance.

5. Low Self Esteem. If you have been reminded over and over again that you are not capable of doing things, you avoid doing things.

Breaking the Indecisiveness Cycle

We all have an ability to learn to take action. Searching for the root cause of your reluctance to taking action is your first step. Think about the past events that are related to the one at hand.

Then, think about the consequences of putting taking action on hold or not taking action at all. Research on the possible effects of all options you have helps to give you confidence on what you want to do.

“Be willing to make decisions. That's the most important quality in a good leader.”
General George S. Patton
(American General in World War I and II, 1885-1945)
