Diabetic Diet Tips

The diabetic diet should be a well balanced and nutritious diet. The following tips will make it easier for you to keep your blood sugar in a health state.

1. Frequency

Eat more frequent smaller meals. We always recommend 5 to 6 small meals a day including 2 or 3 snacks in between meals.

2. Variety

Variety is the most important thing when it comes to balancing a diet. Plan your meals around all food groups and introduce yourself to at least one new healthy food every month. That way you will increase your food choices remarkably in your diabetic diet .

3. Fiber

Add more fiber in your everyday dishes. Soluble fiber which you get from vegetables, fruit and other starchy foods like oats, lentils and bran cereals is very good for you. It will also assist in regulating your blood sugar.

4. Fats

Limit the fat intake in your diet. Choose the low fat foots and aim to use mainly the good fats like olive, canola and avocado oils and nuts and seeds.

5. Sugar

You don’t need to take the sugar out of your diet anymore. However, sugar should be used in moderation by diabetics. Use at most 10g with your meals. The same goes for sweeteners, use them in moderation.

6. Processed Foods

Processed foods are usually loaded with salt, sugar or fat. Some may even be labeled “suitable for diabetics” whilst they are no where close to being healthy. They may be sugar free and high in bad fat. Choosing foods that are in or closest to their original form is best.

7. Smoking

Quitting smoking is the best health decision ever. Everyone has a responsibility to take care of their health and smoking is the worst way to do so. Gradually reduce the amount you smoke per day and start as soon as you can.

8. Alcohol

Excessive drinking is bad for your health. Diabetics should limit their alcohol intake to at most two drinks per day. Drinking should not be done on an empty stomach.

9. Salt

Too much salt is linked to hypertension and other complications. Limit your salt intake.

10. Exercise

Exercise is recommended for everyone. For people living with diabetes, its not even an option, get active.
