Find yourself a mentor
Find yourself a mentor and benefit from years of experience and knowledge. Finding a good mentor may be the only gift you ever need to progress in your career and personal life. However the bulk of the responsibility from a mentor-mentored relationship lies with you.
Why Do You Need a Mentor
I actual sense you don’t need a mentor, but you may consider appointing one if you knew how mentorship would develop your self worth and confidence. I am saying this from experience. I have been mentored in publishing in my website. It would have been very difficult without the guidance and care that I received when I knew nothing about web marketing (more on my mentor).
You may also consider having a career mentor, health mentor, sport mentor, etc. Your mentor’s role is to take you by your hand in your chosen life path and let you learn from his/ her knowledge and experience. A mentor doesn’t decide what you need to do with your life and how. That is your responsibility with him/ her guiding you to your chosen destination. This leads me to the next point of how you choose a mentor.
How Do You Choose a Mentor
Before you appoint someone to be your mentor, think of someone who:
Now that you have identified the right candidate(s) for the mentoring job, get the approaching right. You need to talk to your prospective mentor, preferably in person. You may call or email to set up the initial meeting.
There is nothing as irritating as having a meeting with an unprepared person. You need to prepare very well before your initial date. The preparation is mainly on your goals and ambitions. Be clear on the path you want to follow in life and how you plan to get to your destination. Know your strengths and capabilities, weaknesses and threats.
You must know why you need a mentor. What you think the role of the mentor in your path is, why you chose the prospective mentor, how frequent you want you want to see your mentor. This helps him/ her take the decisions to accept or reject your request. Mentoring takes a lot of one’s time and effort.
Be on time in your meeting and be in your best professional behaviour.
Where to Find a Mentor
You may be wondering where to get a perfect mentor. Remember, your boss is not necessarily your mentor. Even bosses that are supposed to mentor may not be capable. You may look for a capable individual within your company/ organisation/ institution, etc who is placed within a different department to yours. Most people are just not having the mentorship skills and abilities.
Remember that a mentor is not a teacher but there to guide you in the decisions you have already taken, and let you learn from his/ her wisdom in his/ her own decisions. You’ll need to stay focused and teachable to benefit from mentorship. Like any other relationship, yours and your mentors’ needs respect and love. You don’t want to end the relationship with each of you being hurt and disappointed. If you have any skill and experience, offer to mentor someone eager to learn, you’ll both benefit.
