First Child
A first child tends to have a strong and mature character. Some birth
order theories and research findings usually have no basis but for first
kids it has been scientifically proven that there are leadership
qualities. It is very logical to me as the firstborn child is a leader in
the birth order.
In the US, most CEO and business leaders are first kids. If you are a
firstborn you may remember your parents saying; "this is what is
expected of you. You have to grow up, you are no longer a child" and
act
ually implying the opposite to the last born. Lets look at the
statistics below.
"USA TODAY (GCI) asked Vistage, the world's largest CEO organization,
to survey its membership Vistage, the world's largest CEO organization
conducted a survey for USA Today. Of 1,582 CEO responses which were
received, 43% were born first, 23% born last and 33% landed somewhere in
the middle.
USA TODAY followed up with a smaller survey of CEOs on its own panel.
It received responses from 155, of which 59% were first born, 18% were
the youngest and 23% fell in the middle. " Reported USA today.
From the two studies we can conclude that first borns are leaders. I
doubt if they are born leaders but I raised leaders.
As a second child, my first child sister was everything a first born is
expected to be. She is an extrovert, confident, assertive,
authoritarian, dominant, conformist and task-oriented. With my own first
child I was very careful in parenting and with his needs and
necessities. I felt sad when I left him at day care for the first time
and I took him to see a pediatrician more often than necessary. I spent
all my patience and resources on my first child and I knew with my
second that most of what I did was not necessary. Isn't it always the case.
First children have these benefits, which make them more equipped than
the rest. They learn to be confident as their every achievement is
usually celebrated by the parents. Their first tooth, first step, first
day at school, graduating high school, etc. Their firsts are also their
parents' firsts. First kids also get the benefit of being the first
grand children. They therefore get a lot of attention not only from
their parents but extended family.
