If we follow a few healthy eating basics we can keep our doctors away for a very long time. You are probably thinking of an apple a day to take care of your doctor but its no longer enough. We need a lot more than that to stay healthy.

Healthy Eating Basics and Tips

1.Variety. Forget any tip or education you ever got from any nutritionist, just add variety to your diet. You will never need to stop eating any food type if you have all kinds of food in reasonable portion sizes.

2. Carbohydrates. This has slowly become an enemy to our diets. There are lots of myths and hatred towards carbohydrates. Everybody needs carbohydrates to keep energetic. Have a lot of fruit and vegetables and unrefined grain products. Remember to try and have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. I’d say three vegetable and two fruit portions. Make them a variety too.

3. Legumes (beans, peas, lentils). You definitely need plan protein and what better way to get that than from beans, peas and lentils. These are loaded with fibre, are filling and easy to prepare. Research has also proven that you can benefit from the diet full of these food types.

4. Good Fats. Fat is good for you. Just focus on getting the good fats in reasonable portion sizes. Fats are good for your body and skin but when consumed wrongly, they are dangerous. The basic tip is that anoimal fats are generally bad for you whilst plant fat is healthy. Indulge in nuts, seeds, avocado, olive, oily fish, salmon, etc as your source of fat.

5. Animal Products (meat, dairy, eggs). The trick is not demonizing any type of food. Everything in moderation is the way to go. If you are not a vegetarian or vegan, animal products are a good source of protein. Just keep watch of your portion sizes. If you are a vegetarian, stick to point 3 above.

6. Sugar. Watch your sugar intake closely. Remember small quantities of sugar are not bad for your health. Just stick to moderate portions.

7. Salt. Same as for sugar. Salt is very healthy when taken correctly but too much of it can lead to diseases like high blood pressure.

8. Alcohol. If you are an alcoholic, seek professional help excessive alcohol is not just bad for you but dangerous. Stay sober.
