Hormone Imbalance and Bed-Wetting

Recent studies link hormone imbalance and bed-wetting in children. Previously, bed-wetting was associated with psychological issues, deep sleep and small bladder capacity. The new studies that point to imbalanced hormones could be having something to point us to new medication direction.

Some parents opt to use medication like desmopressin to treat bed-wetting in their children. I don’t think it is necessary for young children to be given drugs when they eventually outgrow this behaviour. I never worried with my kids as a waterproof mattress cover usually helps. Besides, a third of kids using this drug don't respond to it. You should worry if your child is aged 5 years and above though.

The study by the University of Aarhus, Denmark. found that children with the type of bed-wetting that does not respond to desmopressin have more salt and urea in their nighttime urine, possibly caused by an imbalance of prostaglandin hormone.

The main cause for concern with bedwetting is the embarrassment the bed wetter feels every morning. Parents should give some form of emotional support to their kids and let them know it is not their fault. The National Kidney Foundation estimates a number of children aged six and over who wet their beds at night at 5 to 7 million. If you are worried about the confidence levels of your child from the condition, get medical or psychological help.

My suggestion is that you consistently get your child to the toilet last thing before bed, avoid them getting much drinks in a couple of hours before bed and maybe waking them up during their sleep to go to the toilet. This worked for my mom and I certainly hope it works for you. If all fails, consult with your medical doctor.

Some adults may also have their bed-wetting moments. This may also be the case of hormone imbalance and bed-wetting.
