Hormone Imbalance and Metabolic Disorder

Hormone imbalance and metabolic disorder go hand in hand, hence the weight instability. Studies have shown that most females who struggle with bulimia have some kind of a hormonal imbalance.

The metabolic disorder may result in a faster or lower metabolic rate in patients. You may put on a lot of weight whilst you have not changed your eating and exercise habits. Some people actually tend to overeat and get to be treated psychologically, whilst their problem is in essence medically.

Dr Sabine Naessén, from the Karolinska Institutet has done some studies linking bulimia to hormone imbalance. She concluded that some women with the bulimia may have too much of the male hormone testosterone. Bulimia is indeed a complex condition that contains hormonal and genetic components, in addition to psychological components. The bulimics could be having higher levels of the male sex hormone testosterone and lower levels of the female sex hormone oestrogen than healthyindividuals. High testosterone, which is directly involved in the normal metabolic rate regulation of the body, may lead toovereating.

Symptoms that a hormone imbalance and metabolic disorder are linked

  • When a change in eating habits follows menstrual problems,
  • When bulimic patients show excess body hair, and
  • When overeaters show symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

The same study found that taking the female hormone was linked to a reduction in bulimic 'symptoms' over a three month period in approximately half the women involved. An oral oestrogen dominated contraceptive may be prescribed as treatment.
