How to Master Meetings

I love meetings, always have. However most people I speak to confess they hate meetings. I don’t think its entirely true; they just hate the kinds of meetings they are invited or exposed to. Meetings can be scary, strenuous or plain boring. However there are very exciting meetings that deliver on the objective.

Think about your meetings with your best friends, believe it they are meetings. Very exciting kinds of meetings that meet your objectives. And the meetings with your family, long lost, never discovered, in-laws, dates with your spouse, etc. More excitement and more joy. I just met my half-brother, for the very first time. He came to my house and I prepared a warm winter stew and veggies. We dined, my family and his. What a day.

Then there are meetings with your broker, financial advisor or bank manager. Very nerve wrecking. Am I making the right decision? You keep asking yourself. And sometimes you are, sometimes you just don’t now but you have to hold these important meetings.

Don’t you like it when you have those tense official meetings? It could be with colleagues, unfriendly business partners, clients from hell, presentations to a bunch of intellectuals who know better that you on the subject or meeting your fiancé’s family for the first time. These are not attractive kinds of meetings but they are necessary for your personal growth.

Meeting Tricks and Tips

  1. Support
  2. . In a new business let a partner, spouse or friend accompany you. You’ll be grateful to have a smile opposite you as you fumble your way through your very first critical business meeting. Support is key in initial meetings.

  3. Proper Sitting Position
  4. . Sit upright; you’ll look confident like you know what you are talking about. Otherwise you might look uninterested, lazy and confused.

  5. Clear Speech; Loud Message.
  6. . Speak your mind in a clear voice with a sound of authority. Avoid using casual language (like “kinda”), and coming out bossy. Rather speak in a calm and easy to hear voice. Not too low, nor too high pitched. Let a friend listen to your speech and give criticism.

  7. Be Straight to the Point
  8. . You will get lost in long explanations. Don’t be tempted to make a long decorated presentation. It loses the substance along the way. Keep your presentation long enough to put the message across yet short enough not to bore your audience. Read the facial expressions of the other people and they’ll be the mirror of how you are doing, and when you should stop.

  9. Closing Lines
  10. . Keep the best closing lines for the end of your presentation. First impressions last and so do last. Consistency in the whole meeting presentation in terms of quality and substance of your message will keep you memorable.

  11. Pace Your Speech
  12. . Listen to yourself. Are you speaking too fast you are sounding noisy? Say a few statements and get some breath. Sound in control of your voice, its attractive.

  13. Your Looks.
  14. 'Looks are irrelevant, as long as the message is clear'; WRONG!!!. Look professional everytime you are meeting a client, business partners, etc. it gives the other person confidence in you and what you are saying. Now go work on that hair.

Happy Business Meetings.
