Hypothyroidism or Underactive Thyroid

Hypothyroidism is the condition, which occurs due to the shortage of thyroid hormone. This happens because the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. One of the causes of hypothyroidism is extreme iodine deficiency. Hypothyroidism leads to a slow metabolism and functioning of other body systems.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Symptoms of underactive thyroid include gaining weight, being constantly tired, depression, being cold, dry skin, swelling around the eyes, bulging eyes, high blood cholesterol, slow heart rate, shortness of breath, constipation, menstrual irregularities and infertility.

Medical Treatment

The under active thyroid can be treated medically by taking a T4 or T3 tablet to replace the thyroid hormone. Taking too much of hypothyroidism treatment can lead to hyperthyroidism. Patients are to be observed by their doctors constantly to adjust the medication requirements. Extra care is needed for the medication of the elderly and people with heart sicknesses. Pregnant people and those having a surgery may need higher doses of T4.

Natural Treatment

The hypothyroidism diet includes a lot of foods with iodine. The diet should include the foods low in salt, high in fibre, good fats, wholegrains and in controlled calories. Please read the diet part of the hormonal imbalance page for making good food choices.

One is likely to need some minerals and vitamins. Foods that belong in cabbage family (cabbages, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi) are said to be bad for under active thyroid, especially when uncooked. Exercise is also very important to combat hypothyroidism. Most importantly, please see an endocrinologist when diagnosed with hypothyroidism or any hormonal imbalance for that matter.
