Parenting by Letting Go

The most difficult part of every parent is letting go. We all know that our kids will grow up sooner or later but wish it came later. A child will leave home, go to college, go travel the world, form relationships outside home, get married and leave his/her room forever.

Prepare yourself to let go of your child. It is what’s best for both of you when the time is right. This is the reason you need to strengthen your relationship and build trust before this time approaches. Most kids leave for college at 17 and never permanently stay at home ever; keep preparing yourself for that time.

Preparation for your child’s independence involves giving your child space whilst they stay with you. Learn to accept that your kids are still individuals and will need to do some things on their own, take some decisions on their own, have their own me-time, etc. Create the space for your kids, to just “be”. They need that for their personal growth.

Don’t over-protect your kids from their own growth. Parenting means enabling your kids to make their own mistakes. Just be there to support them and always observe their behaviours to quickly identify when there is trouble at a distance. Always remember that “Letting go” means you love your child and trust him/her to make the best adult to be proud of. In any case you’ll never protect anyone from themselves.
