Pilates in Maputo

June 3, 2009: Pilates in Maputo

Today at 9am is my first Pilates class in Maputo. I'll be driving together with a fried I met yesterday. The class is held at one of the ladies’ homes. And the instructor is a guy in his 50s or maybe late 40s. I always wonder if I can be able to be an instructor in sport activities like pilates and yoga. It sounds too technical to me.

Remember I’m still so unfit and the class is the whole hour long. I’m not sure this is a great idea. I think I need a day spa more than exercise but I’m giving it a try. A stretch here, squat there, muscle twist there, etc. it’s so tough when one is so unfit but the beauty is that it will get better everyday. So I must just hang in there. Some girls are so flexible, hey roll like balls and everything looks so easy when they attempt. The hour is over and I’m sure I’ll be back on Friday.

We pass by the grocery store on our way home. I’m warned that this is the most expensive but nice grocery store in Maputo. I’m all for fresh foods and I know it does come at a price. But I didn’t think at this price. Everything is so expensive. Food and décor stuff. You know that feeling that you get when you are from the gym for the first time in a while. You behave like a health junkie. I have the same feeling and I think, I just want to cook fresh veggies for dinner. I got a few crispy fresh vegetables, meat and a nice treat for my kids.

At home I had to get a nap. I am so exhausted from the stretching at the gym. So I took an hour’s nap until the geek came back from school to wake me up. I have not worked today and my slave-driver of a boss is not happy. The boss happens to be me too.
