Quit your Job

When you want to quit your job, do it with dignity and consideration. Your current employer has given you a chance and bread on your table and you should be grateful for that. If it’s not your ideal place of work, just quit with respect for all that are affected.

Decision to Quit

Leaving your job is something to think through carefully. Think of you first, your family and your career goals before thinking of your current employer and loyalty. Off course one needs to be loyal to their employer but not at their expense.

Approaching your current employer should be done with clear reasons of your decision. You don’t owe your employer any explanation, however it will be for their good to know if they need to improve employment conditions in future, etc. When you are moving for an opportunity that goes to the direction of your career dreams and passions, they might gladly release you.

Exit Interviews

Your employer may ask for an exit interview. It would be nice of you to allow to be interviewed. Most organisations use the exit interviews to draw their employee retaining strategies. Do the right thing and give an honest interview.

Avoid the temptation to be impolite in your interview because you are leaving. Your honest opinion should be polite and helpful. Try to be as sensitive as you can. If your boss was the worst person you know, point out for instance that management could do with a bit of leadership support, etc. Never burn your bridges when it comes to the time to quit your job. You may wish to come back to your current place of employment sometime in future.

Remember that you don’t have to give information you are not comfortable with giving. If you had some sexual harassment encounters, you may tell the interviewer its personal reasons. If your employer gives you an offer so that you don’t leave, ask for some time to consider it before giving a response. Time will help you decide on what you want and how it will affect your future plans.
