School Readiness
School readiness is a difficult subject and even a touchy one for most parents. Parents take it as a failure when their children are said not to be able to cope with school whilst their peers are ready. The truth is that different kids get ready for school at different ages. Unfortunately the education system operates mainly with ages rather than the ndividual child development.
Some parents would want their kids to go to school earlier that the stipulated education policies. This could be because parents can push their kids beyond their limits sometimes or even most times. In isolated cases this is from genuine concern as their children are fast-developing kids;
Disadvantages of taking a child to school at an early age
Physical Development
Certain physical abilities are necessary for children to cope with school demands. This will include writing and other physical abilities.
Social Development
Kindergarten, nursery or pre-school can be the best place to prepare a child for the real school. However the nursery set-up is still very similar to the home environment. School demands can force your child to grow up the hard and fast way. They have to stand up to the bullies, make friends and tolerate rejection. It’s only at the right age that they are able to deal with all that.
Emotional Development
This could be the most important development stage of a child to determine ability. Most kids develop physically far before they get emotionally fit. If your child goes to school at an emotionally immature stage, they will suffer in many ways. Their mental and social ability will also be severely harmed. Your child may even regress because of the self doubt that comes from not being able to cope with the emotional demands of school.
Mental Development
There are kids who are born geniuses and extremely gifted. In the past these kids would even skip some classes and cope well. However, whilst those children may seem school ready, they may have challenges in the future. As there are more demands at the high school or college levels, a younger child may not be able to mentally cope with the school work.
Be patient and wait until your child is at the right age to cope with what lies ahead of him/ her. You should rather let your child be a child for as long as possible than rush her through the stages so quickly she misses out on all the fun.
