Who should support the work of God?

Who should support the work of God? Where should the funds for the gospel come from?

"Soon afterward Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took the twelve disciples with him, along with some women he had healed and from whom he had cast out evil spirits. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons; Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples."
Luke 8: 1-3 (NLT)

There is question about whether Christians should finance the gospel (churches) or not? Put differently, there is a growing concern among the body of Christ with regard to who should fund the gospel? The above scripture brings some light into this situation. Remember, as Christians, we have to be imitators of Jesus Christ. In a nutshell, we have to do what Jesus Christ would do and do it the way he would do it. If this is the case, we have to look closely into how Jesus managed his ministry. We also need into the sources of funding for his ministry.

If we use the above scripture as a point of departure, it is clear that the members of the ministry were the main source of funding or support for the ministry. The scripture says, “and many others who were contributing their own resources to support Jesus and his disciple. The people who were benefiting from the ministry were the main source of support.

Although, this is a subject that can be explored in further detail, the above scripture and other references in the bible reflect that the members and those who benefited from the ministry were the main source of support. They used their own means to support Jesus and his disciples. If Jesus himself relied on the members for supporting his ministry, this teaches us an important lesson. We have to contribute into the running of our local churches and other churches, depending on the extent of our pockets. We should give in proportion to what we have. This means that churches would rely on people, not only their church members, to support them. When Jesus fed the four thousands, it appears that there was a boy who was possibly not a member of his ministry who provided the food that was multiplied. Fellow Christians, let us give into the work of God. Jesus said that, whoever gives even a glass of water to these little one because he is my disciple will not loose his reward. Give to the work of God with expectations that God will reward you.
