Walk in the Beach: Maputo, Mozambique

May 9, 2009: Walk in the Beach

Maputo is actually great. It’s quite laid back and relaxed. Something that I need at the moment. We stay at hotel Avenida. The hotel is close to former South African President Nelson Mandela's house. For those who don't know, Tata Mandela's wife Graca Machel is from Mozambique. A walk at the beach with hubby and the kids was more tiring than fun.

I am so unfit. Understandably so as I have been baby sitting for almost three weeks in hotels. Organizing my family life and being in one place monitoring logistics and in another doing the same thing. This has been so tiring but without any physical health benefits. Stress and a lot more stress.

After an hour of walking and me not enjoying the view, I suggested we walk back. The Geek refused saying its nicer ahead, daddy agreed we should continue and no doubt the Princess was enjoying in her pram. I am so good at taking defeat like a man. I didn’t argue, just continued at a slower pace. We are searching for a beachfront restaurant for nice prawns. We kept passing small groups of teenage boys either playing in the sand or begging by the beach side. The sight of these kids begging was so depressing to me. We gave them some cookies that we had with us.

Opposite the beach are really luxurious homes. Double and triple storey houses with a sea view. Nice fresh paint, terrific architecture, amazing landscaped gardens, security guards by the gates and all the luxury you can think of. Off course, there is a good presence of the international community in Maputo. So this is where most expats live.

Going back without any prawns in our tummies, no restaurant in the direction we took, the Geek is tired and asks to be carried. There he was in daddy’s shoulders and mommy has to push the pram up the hill. Eish, life is never fair.

Peace,
