Working Mothers

Working mothers is a relatively new concept. In the past women were staying at home to take care of the family whilst men were working outside the homes to get income for their families. There are lots of reasons why more and more moms join the workforce.

Financial Need. There is an increase in the number of single parent homes globally. The mothers in these households have to provide for their families. Some women have to even hold onto two jobs at a time to cope with the financial demands.

For some women, their husbands’ income alone cannot cover the household expenses. The cost of living has just become too high and both parents usually have to be at work to make ends meet.

Career Attachments. Most women start families whilst they love and enjoy their careers. They choose to continue doing what they like whilst they raise their kids. These working mothers, whether they work in the office environment or from home usually need a lot more strength and energy to keep both jobs (mothering and formal job) at a health level. Because of the strength and courage mothers have, they usually succeed in both.

Whilst most people think there are benefits in mothers staying at home and taking care of the children, there might be benefits of independence for kids who grow up with working parents. There is no scientific evidence available yet, on what choice is better for the kids.

Benefits of Working Moms

When parents both work, there is generally more teaming up on house work. This helps families appreciate each other as they know what it takes to keep a clean house and prepare a meal for instance.

Children become more responsible as they have to do most of their chores to assist in keeping order in their homes. They also become more independent as a mommy is not always there to protect them.

Moms who have jobs can be role models to their daughters. Girls who are raised in this manner can grow up to be motivated and high achieving adults.

The family would probably get some support from the extended family like child-minding grand parents. This can bring the extended family together and have kids who are well-rooted in their culture.

Disadvantages of Career Mums

Working parents spend less time with their children. This leads more to guilt conscience to moms than to dads. This could be because men are expected by the society to work outside the homes anyway.

Juggling a demanding job and parenting can be very hectic for mothers. They may end up failing to meet the deadlines at work and/or failing to attend to their children’s needs at times.

The work environment is not tailor-made for women with children. This is a hindrance for career progression for women especially those with young children. They may be considered as lazy when they are continuously absent because of their sick kids.
